A Watsu Massage is an incredible water massage

I decided to investigate for you first Watsu, and booked a Watsu massage at Harbin Hot Springs. I chose it because it was a water massage which I know renders one weight-less and always makes me feel more graceful. It's a water massage and at Harbin - it's done in the most beautiful setting in private pools with tarpaulins to shelter you from sun and potential sunburn. It's a massage I discovered where the central ingredient, other than touch, is 'love'. Watsu is a relatively new bodywork modality having only started in 1980. Now it's found in over 40 countries. Not only is it recognized as helping chronic pain but it's also a great stress reliever as it promotes a deep state of relaxation with noticeable changes in the nervous system.
Section targetingA watsu massage, it turns out is a most incredibly intimate massage - there are times when you lie cradled in your Watsu therapists arms, your body practically merged with theirs. The Watsu massage therapist really has full control of your body and sort of dances and pulls you through the water doing stretching exercises, whilst stimulating your bodies pressure points as they go. Well my first shock came when the female (I'd heard the name) Miko, turned out to be a man, Nico. Hmm.... not quite what I'd anticipated and had I not had the opportunity to watch him at work while I was waiting my appointment as I sat waiting next to the pool, that would really have made me feel extremely nervous. But nevertheless I'd made this appointment and travelled quite a long way with the intention of investigating Watsu massage so there was no turning back. My next was that when I got into the water, I thought I'd float pretty well having experienced a bit of recent menopausal weight gain . But, no, actually I was a pretty bad floater which means I have a relatively high percentage of muscle and hence a reasonably good metabolism. Entrusting my body to anotherThis discovering massage benefits was a breeze--right? The first thing I noticed as I settled into my Watsu massage was an initial sense of feeling out of control. What I was being asked to do was to totally trust and put my body into the hands of a man I'd never met before, whilst experiencing something I'd never experienced before. I wasn't to try and help him, or resist, -- all I had to do was relax and do nothing. Do nothing? Just trust and allow? Sounds easy eh? But the mind can be an interesting little demon, constantly chattering away, and stopping you from being in the moment. stopping you from relaxing. I had to constantly stop it's noisy chattering about: what did he think when he touched my tummy or my hips? Did he notice there were some wobbily bits? Um wasn't his hand a bit close to my breast? Blah! Blah! went the voice. But after a while: - the water was warm, soothing and lulling
- the hands were sure, steady and enormously comforting... I felt totally safe and secure,
- my awareness of his body parts touching my body parts disappeared
- mercifully that inner voice had somehow gone completely quiet.
- my breathing had slowed right down to match his - and at one point I couldn't tell which was his breathing and which was mine.
- my body felt silky and fluid, as light as a feather and graceful.
- I felt beautiful and valued.
And all these things really surprised me - I think it had something to do with the feeling that I was being held with a sense of love and treated as a Sacred Being regardless of my weight, shape or size. Even after one session, I could agree with research done in a Brazilian University where the common theme spoken about as a Watsu massage benefit was that participants felt a greater sense of unity between different parts of their being. That captured exactly how I felt. Watsu, when done by a therapist with the integrity and skill of Nico, I discovered completely took away any body worry I might ever have had. And with the weightlessness provided by water, it would allow anybody, no matter their size, to experience a gracefulness and lightness they never could in any other massage modality. I can honestly say that this watsu water massage was a profound experience for me personally. I left in a state of deep calm, feeling loved by the world which lasted for days.
