Saying no sometimes

The only way to lose weight is to STOP DIETING and to start saying no sometimes!

For me, a healthy, balanced approach to eating, some natural supplements to assist with wellness, good water, some movement, fabulous sleep and relaxation and most importantly, SELF LOVE AND SELF ACCEPTANCE , are the keys to finding your own healthy body weight and health.

Losing weight is an inside job. It’s about finding yourself and finding your own reasons why you gained the weight in the first place. For example, so many children today (and children in previous generations) are taught that “food will fix it”. If you get hurt or you’re feeling sad, perhaps your Mom or Granny gave you some biscuits and tea or a sweetie to make you “feel better”.

We grow up subconsciously reaching for a muffin or choccie every time we’re feeling sad or bad. The awareness comes when you start to acknowledge the reasons for reaching for the rich desserts or comfort carbs. Our daily choices, like the tempting trips for take-aways, our overeating and inactivity make the difference at the end of the year, to how much weight we have gained or not gained.

And in this instance, saying no sometimes is saying yes to vibrant health.

Weight is an internal job

Having said this, it is ultimately our internal reasons and not external reasons that affect the number on the bathroom scale. Have you heard people say:

“I had a baby and haven’t managed to lose the weight……”“I have to take business clients out to restaurants so I have gained weight….”“Work is so stressful, I don’t have time to eat so I grab junk food or a cup of coffee….”

For me, these are not reasons but just words that keep you going downwards on the self-love spiral. BUT, when you start saying no sometimes, there is an upward self-love spiral in everyone’s world too. It’s a place where we can nurture ourselves emotionally and resolve our inner conflict while on a journey of reflection and soul-searching. We can easily unravel all the external reasons when we have let go of the internal one’s.

I think as parents we need to teach our children about a healthy self image, and lifestyle BALANCE (healthy eating and regular activity), not just how to brush their teeth and have good manners.

Saying no in small ways

It all starts with us, making small changes every day, not about willpower,. guilt and deprivation. My view is that deprivation just leads to desperation. Instead of “cutting out” all those foods we shouldn’t eat, why don’t we rather “add in” all the things we should.

I told someone the other day to “SNS” (Say NO Sometimes!). The effect of SNS is that every time you say no to something you lose 200g. Obviously this is not the reality but over a period of time it makes the difference between putting on an extra 5-10 kilograms a year or not.

Please note, that I say SNS not SNET (Say NO Every Time!) Kids like this idea that they can still have treats etc. but not eat rubbish EVERY time. In fact, I think that suits us adults too!! Anyway, the SNS concept made my friend’s eyes light up. Something new to think about. Another way to find BALANCE!

Tweaking

So, I’ve talked about making small changes…….I talk to desperate stressed out corporates, frazzled Moms & Dads (some are both!) and every one in between on a daily basis about a concept I call TWEAKING.

It’s not about revamping everything, but rather focusing on different aspects of your health, including the head stuff and self-talk and TWEAKING things every day until you start to feel more comfortable with what you are eating, thinking and feeling.

An example of TWEAKING is following my 19/21 (Nineteen out of twenty one) rule. Nineteen meals a week you eat healthily and make clever choices and two meals a week you can wobble. These are normally on the week-ends. This helps me stay on track and of course if you don’t do it that’s also fine. It’s not about sticking to rules, it’s just a TWEAKING guideline.

I have other little TWEAKING tips but will save those until next time……..
