The Diet Evolution

There's a diet evolution going on! Well at least that is what many diet companies would like us to believe. The real truth is that it's not so much of a diet evolution as a 'marketing-about-diets' evolution.

In the good old days the word 'diet' simply meant: the usual food and drink of a person. But increasingly it's started meaning taking in fewer calories, or to eat and drink in a regulated fashion especially with the aim of losing weight.

It's the latter definition of a fad diet that I'm so anti and that I'm talking about on this website. Rubenesque part of the diet evolution

The 1st Diet Evolution

Years ago, being large was seen as having reserves - it was seen as healthy. Take a look back in history to pictures of the Rubens - well rounded and ample.

No reason here to ditch diets - because they weren't around yet! I can't help thinking how fabulous that must have been.

But after years and of the female body slowly evolving into something thinner in the media, along came the diet evolution - thin was good, diets were in. ALL diets were good, and the faster you could lose weight the better.

The 2nd diet evolution

But slowly - as people realized there were such a thing called fad diets...well they started getting a bad name. This was when a very small glimmer of the ditch diets movement started. But very small.

Now to be really honest with you, I have to say that in my view ALL diets (the kind that regu,b>late your eating) by definition are fad diets. And here's why. 'Fad' means anything that isn't permanent. So unless you want to, and can, live on a diet for life - it's a fad, plain and simple.

The 3rd diet evolution

diets don't work

Nowadays magazines write articles about how diets don't work - of course the amusing part of it is that these very same magazines still emblazon their covers with headlines like "Diets that work."

Oprah, with all her weight battles, has dedicated program after program to spreading the word that diets don't work. This was partly why I dedicated the Mind over Fatter program to her.

Twelve years ago when I was trying to get articles on diets not working - it was a hard sell but that's no longer the case. now everyone's writing about ditching diets. Oprah on diets don't work In this third diet evolution all that has really happened is that the weight loss industry has got even better at morphing it's messages so as to keep us hoodwinked. Increasingly they are cottoning onto the fact that the word 'diet' is being associated with other words like 'don't work' or 'quit dieting.'

Do you think the fact that diets don't work stops them? Heck no! They just do the same old things but change the wording they use to market their products which gives them a different curb appeal.

So, for example, with Weight Watchers we now have the increasingly popular 'lifestyle change.' And admittedly it does sound nicer! And other plans no longer talk about 'weight loss' but 'fat loss.'

It's a bit like taking an old rickety house and giving it a new curb appeal. A fresh coat of paint on the outside can make it look as if it's new house when really the woodrot on the outside is still all there.

But DON'T BE FOOLED: it's the same old, same old diet just packaged differently.

Now there is a growing movement as groups like Body Positive and the Health at Every Size movement grow in popularity. They're busy bebunking the diet lies that health necessarily comes wrapped in a skinny package.

And the latest obesity research obesity research is turning up more and more evidence that and showing the carrying a bit of weight is not always a health ogre and that it can have health benefits. It seems that all things do a full circle.

The fourth diet evolution

But actually it's what I see as the fourth evolution that really excites me. Because it's a total diet revolution! It'll throw the whole idea of diets right out the window.

With the popularity of movies like 'What the Bleep' and 'The Secret' and books like Esther Hicks, "Ask and it is given," and Gregg Braden's . "Isiah Effect", there's also a new consciousness growing about the law of attraction.

The more we focus on weight loss - the more we keep attracting to ourselves the weight that we then think we need to lose. The more we fear losing our health because of being overweight, the more we block health and well-being flowing to us and the more keep manifesting poor health.

There's a quantum shift going on in people's thinking that I believe will eventually have far reaching effects in how we go about manifesting the bodies we want - and it sure has nothing to do with any form of dieting.

And let's not forget that Oprah's Beauty Revolution is underfoot too.
