• diets may well help you lose weight in the short term, but they have a spectacular 95-98% failure rate in the long term
What I found in my years of research first startled me (could I really believe that
diets didn't work?
). Then I found myself feeling relieved (I wasn't the weak-willed failure I'd always thought I was - hallelujah). Then, finally it made me angry about the way we are being lied to. (I hope it'll make you angry too)
And talking of that - I have a dilemma that I really need your help with. Please won't you take my poll by clicking on the 'win' button below (and you could stand a chance of winning a copy of my book: The Joy-Filled Body).

If you want to find out more about the media and other work I've done you can

(you will need an adobe reader)But vastly more important than any of that...I’ve been there, done that and worn every size from ‘s’ (so thin you could have faxed me) thru ‘xxxxl’ (for plus-size). This is what drives my excitement for sharing my ‘ditch-diets-live-light’ secrets with you.
I've spent years finding out how we can eat, play and love our way to natural wellness.
.......................................................................Discover the biggest diet secret and stop dieting
But before we got any further, let me share with you the biggest weight loss secret of all: Dieting IS for idiots!!!
I hate to admit it but I was an idiot for 20 long years! Wanna know why? The more I tried to get my body over fatter - the fatter I got!
The only sound and permanent weight loss strategies I know have to happen in the MIND. That why I call my program MIND over Fatter rather than BODY over Bulge.
You can download the chapter about my personal journey here.
And if you want an overview of the Mind over Fatter roadmap you'll find it here.
Once I did stop dieting I did lose weight all naturally, until I've reached a weight that is stable and feels right for me.
Now you may think I'm saying I can like myself and feel comfortable in my body because I’ve finally achieved body beautiful status. But um… well to be frank…‘Sports Illustrated’ isn’t exactly knocking my door down to get me on their next bikini photo-shoot and I'm notexpecting that to change any time soon!
.............................................Carrying heavy thoughts
But by far the biggest weight I was carrying was
heavy thoughts
about food and eating. They were stopping me from living in a joy-filled body.
I had to stop being suckered by promises of:
“fast weight loss diet”
or “rapid weight loss tips.” Quick and easy – that’s what I wanted. All that ever got me was eating disorders
yo-yo weight loss and gains
and health problems. And the cure was right under my nose. All I had to do was stop dieting.
Now I can go anywhere, be faced with any food and eating is never an issue. You have no idea what an amazing change this is from being diet obsessed, and so fearful of food that I lived either counting calories, or fretting about 'good food' and 'bad food'.
Exercise is play
and fun too (I never thought I’d say this). I have loads of energy and I’m healthy. And, most importantly, since I stopped dieting, I’ve fallen in like with myself again.

So... here are some Cari Myths
Now maybe, just maybe there is another Cari Corbet-Owen out there who looks just like me...but until I know that for sure here's some info to correct any mis-perceptions.I was recently dismayed to receive a copy of a brochure of 'class schedules' in which it was advertised that I would be running an 8-week Ditch diets and Live lite! course which contained a blatant untruth.
The very last line read: "She has also appeared on the 'Oprah' show." and then (even more dismaying) in small letters under the picture is said: "Picture and quote from website."
That's not true: The Cari Corbet-Owen I know has NOT been on the Oprah show and nor was that quote taken from any website I've had anything to do with.
Here's what is true relative to Oprah.

I have been fortunate enough to have had an extract from my second book (Mind over Fatter - learn to feel great without ever dieting again... it's the same book republished under the title:
The Joy-Filled Body: Eat! Play! and Live Light!)
chosen by the South African 'O magazine' to be published in their December 2007 edition.
You can download a copy of a part of the chapter they chose here:
And in a strange and rather amazing way, Oprah was on my 'writing team' of people who were intimately involved in helping me write this book.
I have had a newspaper article written about my work in the
Mind over Fatter programme
in which a picture of Oprah appeared. Not by my choice or request- that was simply the spin the journalist decided to put on it.
I have had other articles published in the 'O magazine' and been used as a so-called 'expert source' and quoted for articles in their magazine.
I've also been told by too many people to count that I'll one day be on Oprah... and oh my isn't that everyone's dream? To have the work they are passionate about recognized by Oprah? So, yes I'd LOVE to one day be on her show. I'm a great fan of the work she does and I dedicated The Mind over Fatter Programme to her.
Another common Myth
It's simply amazing how many journalists and TV/radio producers insist (despite my correcting them and even sending them my resume) that Cari Corbet-Owen is a dietican or nutrionalist. I am NOT a dietican or nutritionalist. I'm a clinical PSYCHOLOGIST with a special passion for food, eating and body issues.
The Cari Corbet-Owen I know was the consulting psychologist to SANEP - the South African Nutrition Experts Panel. But that doesn't make me a dietican!
To be truthful, I've read so many diet books and books on nutrition that I hope I have a fairly good working knowledge about food and nutrition. But, I don't speak about the nutrient value of food except in very broad term like when I talk about
food myths
and
diet foods.
I leave that up to nutritional experts. As far as I'm concerned the nutritional value of food is an ever-changing minefield that the Cari Corbet-Owen I know is most definitely NOT qualified to speak about.
Another Myth
In 2007 a journalist writing for an Afrikaans paper (that's one of our 11 official languages in South Africa) wrote that the Mind over Fatter Programme had been approved by the Science Institute of South Africa. The Cari Corbet-Owen I look at every day in my mirror has never made such a claim.
Here's a direct quote of what I did write in the 'Thanks and acknowledgement page' of the Mind over Fatter Programme:
"I'd also like to thank the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town for verifying and supplying me with information and Prof. Tessa van der Merwe MBCHB(Honorary secretary for the International Association for study of Obesity) for reading chapter 21 (which is about basic food guidelines) and declaring it "scientifically sound."
